11 years old girl dies after hit-and-run

An 11-year-old girl has died after being struck by a car on a pavement in a hit-and-run in Glasgow.
Sophie Brannan, from Maryhill, died after she was hit by a black Vauxhall Astra which had mounted the path in Sandbank Street on Friday night.
Her 10-year-old friend suffered serious head and leg injuries and her friend's 36-year-old uncle was also injured.
The car had failed to stop following the incident which happened at about 19:40. It was later found abandoned.
Police said it had been driven south on Sandbank Street, then into Maryhill Road and onto Lochburn Street where it was dumped.
Appeal to driver

Det Insp Colin Hailstones, who is leading the inquiry, said: "This was a horrific incident. Sophie, her friend and her friend's uncle, had been out to at the local shops when the incident happened.
"Sandbank Street and Maryhill Road are very busy and there were a lot of people about; many of whom tried to help at the scene.
"We have spoken to them and a number of people who were in the area and are currently checking CCTV to identify the person responsible for this dreadful incident which has left her family devastated."
The driver of the car was described as being white, aged 25-35, of, medium build and had short shaven hair. He was wearing a dark jacket, dark denim jeans and white trainers.
He was last seen running off towards the canal path after abandoning the car in Lochburn Street.
Det Insp Hailstones added: "Somebody out there knows who this person is and I would appeal to them to contact police re his whereabouts. I would also say to the man himself to hand himself in - it's only a matter of time before we track him down."
