World leaders pledge to help Iraq fight ISIL

Thirty countries have pledged to help Iraq in the fight the al-Qaeda breakaway group ISIL "by any means necessary", as leaders gathered to discuss their strategy.

French president Francois Hollande called for a global response to counter ISIL on Monday, as he opened a conference on Iraq, bringing together members of a US-led coalition.

"[The threat] is global so the response must be global," the French leader said, at a Paris conference aimed at coordinating a strategy against the group, which controls parts of northern Iraq and Syria.

Foreign ministers from the main European states, the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, Iraq's neighbours and Gulf Arab states Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the UAE, are in Paris to discuss broad political, security and humanitarian aspects of tackling ISIL.

In holding this conference, the countries meeting today are showing their solidarity and the will to protect themselves against terrorism," Hollande added in a joint news conference with Iraqi president Fouad Massoum.

Massoum said ISIL fighters were responsible for some of the worst atrocities committed in Iraq's history.

The conference convened as Tehran claimed it had rejected a US request to cooperate against ISIL, citing Washington's "evil intentions", despite the US insisting it would not coordinate militarily with Iran.

"The United States asked through its ambassador in Iraq whether we could cooperate against [ISIL]... I said no, because they have dirty hands," said Iran's leading religious and political figure, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

French officials say the coalition against ISIL must go beyond military and humanitarian action, arguing there must also be a political plan for once ISIL has been weakened in Iraq.

They argue that the 2003 US-led intervention in Iraq, in which Paris did not participate, ultimately contributed to the current crisis.

France has said it is ready to join US air attacks in Iraq but says legal and military limitations make it more difficult in Syria, where ISIL's main power base lies.

French aircraft will begin reconnaissance flights over Iraq on Monday at the request of the Iraqi government.

Edible water bottle that looks like breast implant is one of 5 ideas that could change the world

The spherical bottle is made up of gelatinous, edible membranes, and experts say it could one day make disposable plastic drinks containers obsolete
A design that could see the end of plastic water bottles has been hailed as one of five ideas which could change the world.

The Ooho! bottle's composition has been likened to that of a jellyfish or a breast implant.

Due to it being biodegradable, even if you didn't want to eat the bottle, throwing it away still wouldn't have a negative effect on the environment.

Ooho! was designed by Royal College of Art and the Imperial College of London postgraduate Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez.
The Global Design Forum said the product could “make the ubiquitous and unsustainable plastic water bottle obsolete.”

Alongside Ooho! on the Global Forum Design's 'Five ideas that could change the world' shortlist, was a tile that produces energy from the footsteps of people walking across it and a mobile phone app which allows users to perform their eye tests on themselves.

Doctor abused child cancer patients

Myles Bradbury, a paediatric haematologist at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, committed sexual offences against boys aged 8 to 17 between 2009 and 2013, Cambridge Crown Court heard.

The 41-year-old from Herringswell, Suffolk, pleaded guilty to 25 offences including sexual assault and the making of more than 16,000 indecent images.

He was bailed and is due to be sentenced at a later date.

As he left court, Bradbury told reporters "I'm so sorry" and refused to answer further questions.

The offences involved 18 complainants, prosecutor John Farmer said.

The court heard the blood cancer specialist had worked at the hospital for five years.

The judge said the doctor could expect a "substantial" custodial sentence and would have to sign the sex offenders register.

Dr Myles Bradbury admitted a total of 25 offences
Addenbrooke's Hospital said it had contacted the families of the children it was aware of that Dr Bradbury saw. It has set up a helpline for anyone else affected by the case.

Dr Keith McNeil, its chief executive, said: "Our most abject and sincere apologies go out to any and all of our patients and their families who are affected by this in any way.

"There is a very ancient and sacred trust that exists between a doctor and his patients, and quite frankly, it sickens me to think that trust has been breached."

Chief nurse Ann-Marie Ingle, said: "His cold and calculating abuse of trust has deeply shocked us all, including staff who worked alongside him to care for these vulnerable and sick children.

"As soon as we were alerted, we took immediate action to suspend him from clinical practice."

Cambridgeshire Police said "there are likely to be more victims" and asked affected people to call the hospital's helpline.

Det Sgt Shane Fasey, said: "Bradbury's offences were an appalling breach of trust committed against vulnerable victims who had been placed in his care.

"The families believed the boys were in his safe hands but they were actually being abused by Bradbury, who carried out examinations purely for his own sexual gratification and with no medical justification whatsoever."

Pervert who sexually assaulted teenage girl on train caught after she took his picture

A 'grinning' man who sexually assaulted a girl on a train was caught after she covertly snapped him on her mobile phone.

Raja Hussain indecently touched the 18-year-old girl on a train between Rotherham and Sheffield, South Yorkshire, but was hauled before a judge after she revealed the image of him.

The victim was praised for her bravery following her ordeal - which led to his quick arrest by the British Transport Police.

At Sheffield Crown Court, Judge Paul Watson QC, said: "She is to be commended for the fact that she stuck to her guns and brought this to the attention of the authorities.
"People who randomly sexually assault members of the public must expect custodial sentences.

"What makes it serious is the element of fear this causes others.

"She was brave enough and alert enough to report you and give the police information which eventually led to your arrest and eventual plea of guilty."

Catherine Duffy, prosecuting, told the court that the woman was waiting for a train at Sheffield Midland station on October 29 last year when Hussain started 'grinning' at her.

Raja Hussain was found guilty at Sheffield Crown Court
Miss Duffy said she felt 'intimidated'.

They boarded a train and Hussain sat opposite her but passengers were asked to change trains.

On the second train Hussain, from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, sat next to the woman.

"The defendant was looking at pictures of naked women on his mobile phone," Miss Duffy said.

"He moved closer to the complainant and began to take off his jacket. As he did so he touched her."

The student edged away but his body remained in contact with hers and he touched her leg while 'grinning'.

The woman pretended to text a boyfriend to get Hussain to stop and also sent messages to her mother.

One read: "I think this man is trying to stalk me, I actually feel sick."

Miss Duffy added: "As he got off the train in Rotherham she managed to take a picture of the defendant on her mobile phone."

Police issued an appeal with the picture of Hussain and he was arrested.

Sarah Smith, defending, said there was no premeditation and Hussain was suffering from poor mental health at the time.

He had lost his 'highly respectable' job due to his mental health problems which included depression with psychotic features, hallucinations and delusional beliefs.

Judge Watson said the woman had been left scared to use the rail network.

Hussain pleaded guilty to sexual assault and was given an eight-month jail term, suspended because of his previous good character, and an ASBO, banning him from trains for three years.

Libya migrant boat sinks: Scores feared drowned

Navy spokesman Ayub Qassem said 36 people had been rescued after the vessel - which carried 250 - went down near Tajoura, east of Tripoli.

"There are so many dead bodies floating in the sea," Mr Qassem told reporters.

Reports are also emerging of another sinking, in which up to 500 people may have drowned last week off the coast of Malta.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) quoted two Palestinian survivors as telling them that the traffickers deliberately sank the boat after an argument on board.

The Maltese authorities have not yet commented.

There has been a surge in the number of migrants leaving Libya this year, with human traffickers taking advantage of the political chaos.

Rival militias have been battling for control of the country.

The navy and coastguard have few resources and often have to borrow boats from fishermen and other agencies.

Mr Qassem said most of the migrants were Africans and many were women.

One of the 36 survivors was a pregnant woman, he told the AP news agency.

This is the fourth boat carrying migrants from Libya to have sunk in the past month.

Microsoft pays $2.5bn for Minecraft maker Mojang

Microsoft has bought Mojang, the Swedish firm behind the popular video game Minecraft, for $2.5bn (£1.5bn).
The title, which has sold over 54 million copies, allows players to build structures with retro Lego-style blocks, as well as explore a large map and battle others.

The deal was announced by Xbox chief Phil Spencer.

Mojang, whose three founders of will leave the company, assured fans that "everything is going to be OK".

Some analysts have speculated the deal is designed to attract more users to Microsoft's Windows Phone devices.

The acquisition comes a year after Microsoft bought the Finnish mobile phone firm Nokia.

Minecraft creator Markus Persson has been critical of Microsoft
Minecraft is one of the top-selling apps on both Apple's iOS store and and Android's Google Play, and has recently been released for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, further boosting sales.

Last month, it was the third most popular console game, according to market research firm NPD Group, despite being on sale for a while.

The game's developer, Mojang, which was founded in 2009, brought in over $100m in profit last year, and employs about 40 people.

Microsoft said the Mojang team would join its game studio, which is responsible for titles such as Halo, Forza and Fable.

The tech giant's chief executive, Satya Nadella, said: "Minecraft is more than a great game franchise - it is an open world platform, driven by a vibrant community we care deeply about, and rich with new opportunities for that community and for Microsoft."

prostitute gets 100 days imprisonment for stealing customer's N500k

Rosemary Ebikeme a 23 year old prostitute has been sentenced to 100 days in prison by an Abuja court for stealing a customer's $3,200 (about N500,000).

Rosemary was convicted after she pleaded guilty to a one-count charge, she was also given an option of N5,000 fine.

The judge cautioned the convict to desist from the crime, saying that the sentence would serve as a warning to others.

Prosecutor Ona Odigiri told the court that on September 4 one Aleixandre Sachir of Tack Continental Estate, Life Camp, reported the matter to Life Camp Police Station. The prosecutor further told the court that the complainant met the convict in a cinema hall and took her to Waxride Hotel. He said the convict stole $3,200 from the complainant on September 2 and eloped.

Odigiri said that when the convict came back to complain on September 4, she was apprehended and handed over to the police. The convict, however, pleaded guilty to the charge and begged the court to temper justice with mercy. She said: “Please have mercy on me; I am a student and I am only looking for money to pay my school fees. I stole the money to do business so that I will stop selling my body for money. Please forgive me. “I stole the money from him, even though he paid me N5,000 for my service, please have mercy in God’s name.”

The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code Law.

leopard preys on drunk villagers walking home from booze sessions

A man-eating leopard has claimed more than a dozen victims as villagers fear it is targeting drunk men returning home after boozing sessions.

The jungle cat has spread its reign of terror over the past two-and-a-half years, in the Didihat region of the Kumoan hills in Himalayan India.

Repeated attempts have been made to shoot the elusive leopard after the Uttarakhand Forest Department declared it as a man-eater.

The beast began its killing spree in January 2012, attacking a 46-year-old man from the Simar village.

And the spotted killer went on to claim five more victims that year and five in 2013.

So far in 2014, two more victims have perished, the latest one a 44-year-old on August 1.

Villagers have voiced fears that the animal is preying on men stumbling home drunk after dark.

Remote villages: The wild cat has struck in the Didihat region of the Himalayas
It is believed the animal is between 10 and 12-years-old and may have developed a taste for human flesh when it was unable to catch its favoured food, dogs.

Many villagers in the region now return home before sundown and carry sticks as the travel through forested areas.

Attempts to hunt down the dangerous wild cat have failed.

Pithoragarh’s forest officer YK Singh says, "This month we had sent a team of shooters in the affected village, but they were unsuccessful in their mission. This is the third attempt made so far."

Brazil builds giant Amazon observation tower

Construction has begun on a giant observation tower in the heart of the Amazon basin to monitor climate change.

The Amazon Tall Tower Observatory is expected to rise 325m from the ground.

Its instruments will gather data on greenhouse gases, aerosol particles and the weather in one of the largest continuous rain forests on the planet.

Brazilian and German scientists hope to use the data to better understand sources of greenhouse gases and answer questions on climate change.

The tower is being constructed out of steel that was brought thousands of kilometres from the south of Brazil by road and river raft to the site 170 km outside the Amazonian city of Manaus.

Because of its height, the tower will make it possible to investigate the alteration and movement of air masses through the forest over a distance of several hundred kilometres.

"The measurement point is widely without direct human influence, and therefore ideal to investigate the meaning of the forest region for the chemistry and physics of the atmosphere," said Jurgen Kesselmeier, the project coordinator for the German side, quoted on the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz website.

WEIRD:Teenage girl launches career as...a professional mermaid

Emily Keat, 19, built her own 6ft tail and trained for four hours a day to turn herself into a half woman half fish performer.

She stitched together old swimsuits to create a glittery outfit - and has even dyed her hair red to resemble her fishy idol Ariel from The Little Mermaid.

After leaving college she's launched herself as a professional mermaid and makes a living from children's parties, modelling and special events such as promoting clean beaches.

Emily, of Wadebridge, Cornwall, said: "I absolutely love being a mermaid - I couldn't imagine doing anything else.

"I watched videos and looked at pictures, and was amazed at how realistic and graceful they are.

"I have always being interested in mythical creatures. When I was younger I wanted to be a fairy.

"But making a fairy costume didn't seem practical. I could make some wings that looked really lifelike but they would never be able to fly.
With a mermaid tail I would actually be able to swim like a mermaid.

"I wasn't sure it would work in the water. But once I had made it I tried it out and was amazed at how well it worked."

Emily used her arts and crafts skills to sow together Lycra swimsuits sealed them with silicone bonding to make her tail.

The DIY tail worked perfectly and she spent the summer learning to dive, swim and hold her breath underwater to emulate Disney's Ariel.

Emily said she grew up obsessed with fantasy creatures and fairies but decided against becoming a Tinkerbell impersonator - because she wouldn't be able to fly.

The teen, who recently completed a foundation degree at Truro and Penwith College, said: "Swimming in the tail takes time to master and it can feel like you're sinking at times - but it's faster and I'm becoming better and better at it.

"Ultimately I want to raise awareness of keeping the seas clean and safe for marine animals. I want to use this as a platform for doing good.

"I want to educate children about sea pollution in a way that's fun so they will enjoy it and learn at the same time."

Emily's biggest inspiration was Mermaid Melissa, a famous aquatic performer from the US who glides through the water thanks to a bespoke £3,500 tail.

TB Joshua links guesthouse collapse to plane

TB Joshua, one of Nigeria's best known preachers, has linked a small plane circling over a church guesthouse in Lagos to its subsequent collapse.
At least 40 people died when the two-storey guesthouse for members of the Synagogue Church of All Nations collapsed on Friday.

There is no official comment. Local officials have said additional floors were being added to the structure.

Mr Joshua - also known as the Prophet - regularly preaches to vast crowds.

The popular televangelist says a small plane had circled over the building four times before it collapsed on Friday afternoon and it may have been an attempt to kill him.

"It was yesterday, Friday, as I was praying; they came to call me that there was an airplane hovering over the church. They said it is like it wanted to land," his statement said.

He said about 30 minutes later, it came over the building several times.

"About five minutes after, the building came down."

He gave journalists a CCTV video clip of the alleged plane, urging them "to use their discretion to write on what they saw".

Rescue officials say 130 people were pulled out of the rubble - some are being treated in local hospitals. Many foreigners are believed to have been there at the time.

Mr Joshua's services, at a mega-church in Lagos's Ikotun district, are known for attracting thousands of people.

Followers in Nigeria and abroad believe he has the gifts of healing and prophecy.

Pope marries 20 cohabiting couples in sign of papacy shift

Pope Francis has presided over the marriage of 20 couples at the Vatican, including some who were cohabiting, one of them with a child.

Pope Francis had asked to marry 40 people from different social backgrounds who represented modern couples.

It was the first papal marriage ceremony of its kind in 14 years.

The pope has expressed greater tolerance than his predecessor on many issues, including family values.

Sunday's ceremony at St Peter's Basilica in Rome comes three weeks before a meeting of Catholic bishops from around the world to examine church teachings on family matters.

One of the couples married was a man whose previous marriage was annulled and a single mother with a daughter from a previous relationship.

The weddings were celebrated as part of a mass at St Peter's Basilica on Sunday
Pope Francis told the couples at the two-hour ceremony that marriage was "not an easy road, it's sometimes a contentious trip, but that's life," AFP news agency reports.

Very slowly, the church under the guidance of Pope Francis is facing the fact that many Catholic couples cohabit before marriage, use contraception freely and divorce and remarry without seeking an annulment,

It was the first marriage Pope Francis has conducted in his 18-month papacy. The last wedding to be presided over by a pope took place under John Paul II in 2000.

The world's clergy will gather in Rome in October to discuss issues such as marriage, divorce and contraception.

They are expected to discuss the results of a worldwide survey launched by the Vatican last year to find out what Catholics really think about its teaching on marriage and family life.

Islamic State crisis: Australia to send 600 troops to UAE

Australia says it is sending 600 troops to the Middle East ahead of possible combat operations against Islamic State (IS) militants in Iraq.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott said the deployment, initially to the United Arab Emirates, was in response to a specific US request.

Nearly 40 countries, including 10 Arab states, have signed up to a US-led plan to tackle the extremist group.

France is hosting a regional security summit on Monday.

US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Paris late on Saturday after a four-day tour of the Middle East trying to drum up support for action against IS.

Last week, US President Barack Obama presented a strategy to fight the group in both Iraq and Syria.

Speaking on Sunday, Prime Minister Abbott said Iraq had made it clear that it would "very much welcome" a military contribution to restore security.

He said the force, which will also include up to eight Super Hornet fighter jets, was part of "an international coalition" not simply an "American-Australian operation".

Mr Abbott said no decision had yet been taken to commit the forces, which will begin deploying next week, to combat action.

The announcement comes two days after Australia raised its terrorism threat level from medium to high.

Security officials are thought to be concerned by the growing number of Australians "working with, connected to or inspired by" Islamist groups, Mr Abbott said on Friday.

Islamic State is now in control of large parts of Iraq and Syria and the CIA estimates that the group could have as many as 30,000 fighters in the region.

Ebola outbreak: Liberia 'sacks absentee officials'

Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has sacked 10 government officials who have been "out of the country without an excuse," amid a national Ebola crisis.

She said the officials had shown "insensitivity to our national tragedy and disregard for authority".

The 10 were given a one-week ultimatum more than a month ago to return home.

Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea are the worst-hit countries in an outbreak that has killed more than 2,400.

The 10 officials include two commissioners, six assistant ministers and two deputy ministers at the justice ministry.

The BBC's Jonathan Paye-Layleh says a press release issued from the presidency on Saturday reported that the officials had been fired "with immediate effect".

The press release went on: "Junior officials who are not subject to presidential approval will forfeit all compensation and benefits until they return home to join in the fight against the Ebola virus disease."

It listed the names of eight people in the category.

New ISIS Video Reportedly Shows the Execution of British Hostage

The terrorist group ISIS has released a new video showing the execution of David Cawthorne Haines, the third western hostage to be executed by the group in the last month. Haines was originally from Scotland. He most recently lived in Croatia with his wife and young daughter. He worked on humanitarian missions through the Middle East. The release of the video was confirmed by SITE, the independent intelligence group that first identified the release of the video of Steven Sotloff's murder.

In the video, Haines executioner cites Cameron's promises to arm Iraqi Kurds, and his "evil alliance" with the United States. Like the other video, Haines was forced to read a statement blaming his government for his own death. David Cameron has called an emergency government meeting for tomorrow morning.

The British Foreign Office says they are working "urgently" to verify the authenticity of the video. The White House has not yet commented.

The Wire has viewed the video and provided a description below. Please note that this description is disturbing.

In the video, a clip of David Cameron giving a speech about foreign policy is included, specifically in regards to British support of the Kurdish rebels in fighting against the Islamic State. After the speech, the screen flashes "A Message To the Allies of America," in the same editing which was used in the Steven Sotloff video. David Cawthorne Haines then appears on screen, giving this speech (similar to that which Sotloff and Foley gave):

"My name is David Cawthorne Haines. I would like to declare that I hold you, David Cameron, entirely responsible for my execution. You entered voluntarily into a coalition with the United States against the Islamic State, just as you're predecessor, Tony Blair, did. Following a trend amongst our British Prime Ministers who can't find the courage to say no to the Americans. Unfortunately, it is we, the British public, that will in the end pay the price for our Parliaments selfish decisions."

After that, the executioner appears, giving this speech:

"This British man has to pay the price for your promise, Cameron, to arm the Peshmerga against the Islamic State. Ironically, he has spent a decade of his life serving under the same Royal Air Force that is responsible for delivering those arms. Your evil alliance with America which continues to strike the Muslims of Iraq and most recently bombed the Haditha Dam will only accelerate your destruction. And playing the role of the obedient lapdog, Cameron, will only drag you and your people into another bloody and unwinnable war."

The execution then occurs. The screen cuts to black, then shows the aftermath (this has become ISIS' format for videos of this sort.) The executioner appears to be the same man as from the previous two videos, nicknamed "Jihadi John." He covers Haines mouth, and takes a short blade to Haines throat. Haines, just as the two other victims shown in videos, wears an orange robe.

This is the third video in which the executioner uses a short blade, distinctly different from al Qaeda videos, in which a long sword is generally used. Like the previous two videos from ISIS, Haines head is placed upon his back after the executioner. However, unlike the Foley and Sotloff videos, Haines body is covered in blood, the entire back of the orange robe is soaked and long bloody streaks are shown down to Haines's legs. In this scene, Haines hands appear bound with metal handcuffs, which were not shown as visibly on Foley and Sotloff.

Jilted ex 'cooked his former lover's pet dog and fed it to her'

Ryan Watenpaugh has admitted leaving two dog's paws outside her ex-girlfriend's home but denies killing the animal

A man has been arrested after he allegedly cooked his girlfriend’s dog and FED it to her for a romantic meal.

Ryan Watenpaugh is said to have turned his ex-girlfriend’s Pomeranian pooch into a dish and served it to her before sending a gloating text message telling her what he had done.

The 34-year-old then left two paws belonging to a Pomeranian outside the woman's California home.

Watenpaugh is accused of repeatedly beating his former partner while they were in a relationship.

During one attack, the woman left the apartment and came home later to find her boyfriend had left and her beloved pet, called Bear, was missing.

The couple briefly reconciled last week and police claim Watenpaugh cooked the woman a meal.

Investigators say he later sent her a text message asking her how her dog had tasted.

Sgt Todd Cogle said: “It set all of us back when we actually read the text messages about the incident.

“You can really get the sense from reviewing the text messages that the relationship was extremely toxic. It was a pressure cooker of anger and resentment.”

Watenpaugh, 34, has been charged with animal cruelty, domestic violence, stalking and false imprisonment.

He claims he did not kill or cook the dog but has admitted he sent the creepy texts and left the paws - which belonged to another dog - at his ex's home.

Nigerian soldiers kill more than 100 Boko Haram militants

More than 100 Boko Haram militants have been killed by Nigerian soldiers in a rare victory as the insurgents advanced on a town near the northeast Nigerian city of Maiduguri.

One officer said a feared Boko Haram commander was among some 150 militants killed in a battle on Friday in Konduga town, 35km from Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state and birthplace of the extremist group.

The officer spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorised to speak to reporters.

A member of the local vigilance group, Kolobe Abdullahi, told journalists that the residents could not sleep on Thursday night when they got the hint that insurgents intended to attack the town.

Abdullahi said, “People saw them when they were coming and they were seriously dealt with. As I am telling you, more than 100 of the Boko Haram members were killed and several others were injured.

“We destroyed all their utility vehicles, some cars and motorcycles. We also seized some arms and vehicles.”

A military source within the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maiduguri also confirmed on the telephone that the insurgents were dealt with.”

The military authorities confirmed the killing, adding that three Hilux vans and one other Buffalo vehicle with mounted anti-aircraft guns, three general purpose machine guns and over 30 AK 47 rifles were recovered from the terrorists.

A statement issued in Abuja by Col. T. Antigha of the Army Public Relations said four soldiers were injured in the three-hour battle.

The Army said photographs taken at the scene of battle would be circulated as soon as they are available.

The statement read, “At about 5.30 am today (Friday), Boko Haram terrorists launched a massive attack on Konduga town, about 35 kilometres from Maiduguri. After about three hours of fierce fighting, Nigerian troops routed the Boko Haram fighting force of over a hundred terrorists.

“Further to the staggering loss of men, Boko Haram also suffered extensive losses in equipment. Four Nigerian soldiers were wounded in action. The entire area is still being combed for terrorists who may have escaped with bullet wounds. Morale of troops remains very high.”

Boko Haram in recent weeks has taken a string of towns stretching over 320km alongside Nigeria's northeast border with Cameroon in a new campaign to create an Islamic caliphate.

Family of Briton Ghavami held in Iran appeal for release

The family of a British-Iranian woman being held in Iran after going to a men's volleyball match have appealed for her release.
Ghoncheh Ghavami, 25, was detained after the match in June. Her family say they do not know if she is being held under any charge.

She is now reportedly being held in Tehran's infamous Evin prison.

The UK Foreign Office said it was aware of reports of a Briton being detained and is "following up" the case.

The FCO says it has "limited ability to assist [UK nationals] in any difficulty" in Iran and that the Iranian authorities are "unlikely to grant any consular access".

Ms Ghavami was initially arrested after the match, which took place on 20 June.

There was a protest at the time against a ban on women attending, but her brother Iman told BBC 5 Live Breakfast that she was "simply there to get into the stadium and watch the match".

She was released but then re-arrested when she went to collect her belongings a few days later.

Mr Ghavami said his sister had not been able to see her lawyer since she had been detained but her parents had been allowed to see her some 50 days after her arrest.

She has spent part of her detention in solitary confinement.

"She is certainly experiencing a nightmare. Everyone wants it to end," Mr Ghavami added.

Minna Court Remands Man For ‘Gay’ Act

A Magistrates’ Court in Minna on Wednesday remanded in prison custody a 37-year-old man for alleged homosexuality. The man, Yakubu Danladi, was arraigned on a one-count-charge of an “unnatural offence” with a 14- year-old Ahmed Mohammed, in his house in Minna, the Niger State capital. The police prosecutor, Afred Auta, had told the court that one Danasebe of Angwan Daji in Minna reported the matter at the State Police Headquarters on Sept. 9. Mr. Auta said Danasebe told the police that the accused had been having carnal knowledge of Mohammed on several occasions over the past six months. Mr. Auta said during police interrogation at the station, the accused pleaded guilty to the offence. “Mohammed has been living with me for the past two years because his mother who is my relative gave the boy to live under my care,” the accused said. “The mother of the boy came to my house on Sept. 8 to take back the boy. It was then I realised that blood was coming out of the boy’s anus. “I told the mother to wait till the end of the month when I will receive my salary to take the boy to the hospital, but she refused. “She objected to it by reporting the case to my uncle who then called the vigilante group; they started beating me and insulted me before taking me to the police,” Mr. Danladi said. However, when the charge was read to the accused in court, he pleaded not guilty to the offence. In her ruling, Magistrate Amina Musa, adjourned the case till Sept. 29 to allow police conclude their investigations. (NAN)

Ebola hospital workers walk out over pay

Staff at major district hospital in Sierra Leone say they have not been paid for two weeks despite huge risk involved.

Local workers have gone on strike in an overcrowded Ebola ward at a major district hospital in Sierra Leone's disease-stricken east over claims the government is failing to pay them.

Up to 80 workers crowded the entrance compound to the hospital on Friday, deserting their posts and bringing operations at the Ebola treatment ward to a standstill. The workers were peaceful but frustrated.

The workers were recruited nationally to boost staff numbers at Kenema Government Hospital, where they operate inside a tented 'high-risk' zone as nurses and support staff tasked with treating the sick, disinfecting contaminated equipment, cleaning faeces, vomit and bloodm, and removing and burying dead bodies.

"I started working here one month ago and we have been paid nothing for the last two weeks," Umaru, a hygienist, told Al Jazeera. "We have stopped everybody from working until we receive our risk incentive."

The hospital is a critical facility catering to a population of several hundred thousand and began admitting the first Ebola cases in Sierra Leone because it was thought to be the only place with appropriate equipment.

The Ebola facility was set up early this summer on the same site as ordinary medical operations but since the outbreak began most other non-Ebola wards stand deserted and many workers have fled.

Staff deaths

Remaining staff say more than 38 nurses and doctors have been infected and died at this site since the outbreak began, among them renowned physician Dr Sheik Umar Khan.

Ebola support staff are supposed to be paid 500,000SLL ($110) per week but have been working for free in Kenema for the past two weeks.
