Man commits suicide in Ekiti state after two failed attempts

After two failed attempts to kill himself in the last three years, a man said to be in his 30s named Mundiu (pictured above) finally succeeded in killing himself yesterday September 19th.

According to Sun News, Mundiu killed himself in the hall way of his compound in Ayede-Ekiti community in Oye local government of Ekiti state around in the early hours of yesterday morning.

According to one of his neighbors, Muntiu had always complained of being poor and unsuccessful and was said to be very frustrated. A day before he killed himself, he mentioned to neighbours that they will be witnessing drama on Friday but no one knew he was talking about him killing himself...

"He used to complain about the fact that he was very poor and living a wretched life, that he wasn’t making money to take care of himself. Two months ago, he had an okada (motorcycle) accident that almost claimed his life. He was moved out of the community for treatment. Two weeks ago, we learnt that he was dead but just three days ago, we sighted him in the community. Yesterday (Thursday), people heard him saying that by today (Friday) the people of Ayede community would witness an amazing drama. No one really read any meaning to what he was saying. We didn’t know that he was referring to this suicidal action”, a resident of the area said Another neighbour of the deceased said the first time he tried killing himself, it was his father who was alive then that saved him Mundiu. He also tried killing himself the second time by jumping into the river in Lokoja “It was past 12 midnight this morning, a deaf neighbour of the deceased, who we call Taiwo, raised the alarm that he saw something strange and alerted others to come and see it. We were asking him what it was that happened but because he could not hear us, he didn’t answer us. All we did was to just follow him to where he was directing our attention to. Eventually, he took us to where the deceased had hanged himself. He was already dead by that time. So, we just left him as you have seen him. We immediately called the police but as you can see, they haven’t come. Mundiu had attempted suicide two times before now. The first time, he had tried to hang himself but thankfully, his father caught him and stopped it. Since then, his father had kept the rope as an object of remembrance. Now his father is dead and could not witness this abominable act, he has eventually committed. His second attempt at killing himself was a time we were told he just jumped into a river. That happened in Lokoja, Kogi State. God had brought people on time to rescue him. This was his third time and no one was there to stop him, “ the neighbour said.

British gardener grows Guinness World Record breaking onion

Tony Glover has smashed the existing record for his whopping vegetable, which weighs an eye-watering 18lbs and 11oz and measures 32 inches around its widest part.

When recipes call for a large onion, on average they mean around 12 ounces. But Mr Glover’s whopper was almost 25 times that size.

If he wanted to, the amateur gardener from Small Heath in Moira, south Derbyshire, could use his enormous haul to cater for a huge number of people.

That one onion is large enough to make 250 onion bhajees, French onion soup for 36 people or 50 portions of onion rings!

Mr Glover, who has his own business which produces hand-crafted snooker cues, beat the existing record held by Peter Glazebrook from Newark in Nottinghamshire by 10 ounces.

He said: "I've been growing vegetables since I was about 16. I used to do it with my dad.”

The onion grew in Mr Glover’s back garden. He added: "Back then if you could grow one to be 5lbs you had done very well, so I'm very happy with the one I've grown this year."

Producing a record-breaking onion is not simply down to luck and the right weather conditions. Mr Glover revealed that a lot of hard work went into it too.

"I planted this one in October last year,” he said.

"It has been growing in my greenhouse which is heated during the winter and cooled in the summer.

"I've also got grow lights fitted to it inside to simulate the sun when the days get shorter or when the weather isn't very good.

"I feed them with a high nitrogen-based food and have to make sure the humidity is just right."

Tempting as it may sound, Mr Glover is not planning to throw the onion-based dinner party just yet. Instead he plans to use the seeds from his big onion to grow an even bigger and heavier one next year.

Man desperate for iPhone 6 rents out GIRLFRIEND to fund Apple handset

The new iPhone 6 is one coveted piece of kit - but would you sell your girlfriend to buy one?

This man in Shanghai offered to rent out his other half, reportedly to generate the cash to buy Apple's latest gadget.

He advertised the 'girlfriend share' on a placard near the campus at Songjiang University, with deals available by the hour, day or month.

However he did stipulate that no "funny business" would be allowed, with interested parties limited to eating and studying with her as well as enjoying 'three-person dates'.

Ebola crisis: Sierra Leone begins three-day lockdown

Many people have been reluctant to seek medical treatment for Ebola, fearing that diagnosis might mean death as there is no proven cure.

A team of 30,000 people is going house-to-house to find those infected and distribute soap.

But critics say the lockdown will damage public trust in doctors.

Meanwhile in neighbouring Guinea, the bodies of eight missing health workers and journalists involved in the Ebola campaign have been found.

A government spokesman said some of the bodies had been recovered from a septic tank in the village of Wome. The team had been attacked by villagers on Tuesday.

Guinea's prime minister said an investigation was under way, and vowed to catch the perpetrators of the "heinous murders".
Sierra Leone is one of the countries worst hit by West Africa's Ebola outbreak, with more than 550 victims among the 2,600 deaths so far recorded.

In the capital, Freetown, normally bustling streets were quiet, with police guarding roadblocks.

During the curfew, 30,000 volunteers will look for people infected with Ebola, or bodies, which are especially contagious.

They will hand out bars of soap and information on preventing infection.

Officials say the teams will not enter people's homes but will call emergency services to deal with patients or bodies.

Volunteers will mark each house with a sticker after they have visited it, reports say.

Pres. Jonathan lacks the experience to lead Nigeria- Atiku Abubakar says

Former Vice President and APC presidential aspirant Atiku Abubakar said in an interview with AFP today that President Jonathan lacks the experience to lead Nigeria, saying it's the reason Boko Haram activities has been on the increase.

"This insurgency shouldn’t have lasted even six month
nths. Within weeks, we (Obasanjo and I) crushed it because we did not neglect military training and, of course, we did not lack the leadership and the capacity to take decisions. I told. Nigerians that he [Jonathan] did not have the capacity; he didn’t have the experience. He didn’t have anything and yet they gave him the chance, the opportunity. And they can now see the chance and the opportunity they gave him. Of course, I’m more experienced than he is. I believe my capacity cannot be compared with his, in all respect.” he said

Ebola outbreak: Guinea health team killed

Some of the bodies - of health workers, local officials and journalists - were found in a septic tank in a village school near the city of Nzerekore.

A journalist who managed to escape told reporters that she could hear villagers looking for them while she was hiding.

A government delegation, led by the health minister, had been dispatched to the region but they were unable to reach the village by road because a main bridge had been blocked.

On Thursday night, government spokesman Albert Damantang Camara said the victims had been "killed in cold blood by the villagers".

The bodies showed signs of being attacked with machetes and clubs, he said.

France launches first air strikes on IS in Iraq

A statement said planes had attacked an IS logistics depot in north-east Iraq.

France was already carrying out reconnaissance flights over Iraq and providing weapons to Kurdish fighters.

President Hollande said on Thursday that French air strikes would only target the jihadist group's positions in Iraq, and not neighbouring Syria.

He also insisted that he would not send ground troops.

On Friday, Mr Hollande's office said Rafale planes had carried out the attack and "the objective was hit and completely destroyed".

The statement said other operations would continue in the coming days.

US fighter jets and drones have carried out more than 170 air strikes on IS in Iraq since mid-August.

Florida man kills his daughter and her six children

The children range in age from three months to 10 years old, said Gilchrist County Sheriff Robert Schultz.

The authorities have identified the gunman as Don Charles Spirit, 51.

Schultz said a colleague responded to reports of a shooting on Thursday afternoon and on arrival made contact with Spirit before he killed himself.

Spirit was in prison in 2006
"I haven't seen anything like this at all," said Schultz.

"This county, this community is going to be devastated from this. It is a small county, we are all family here.

"We're asking for prayers for this community and the families involved."

After Spirit took his own life, police found the other seven bodies in the house, although there were other people there who were still alive.

Spirit, who was known to police previously, was the only suspect, said Schultz.

According to the Florida Department of Corrections, the grandfather was once behind bars for a gun charge, and was released in February 2006.

Bell is a town of about 350 people located 30 miles west of Gainesville.

Multiple shootings in the US have happened in schools, colleges, military institutions, shopping malls and homes. Each time innocent victims die, but this rural community has been shaken by the multiple killing, According to BBC

Photo: Newborn baby found in toilet pipe after young girl gives birth and ran away

A young student in a university in China, who hid her pregnancy throughout, gave birth to a baby girl inside a toilet pipe, hoping the baby would flush down the pipe. Fortunately the pipe wasn't wide enough to take the baby down and so her body became wedged a short way down the pipe. The baby immediately started crying and the new mum fled. Fortunately, the baby's cries was loud enough to attract the attention of other students who immediately raised an alarm.

Firemen were called to the student dormitory in the city of Linyi in China's Shandong Province, and they immediately went to work to free the new born

But firemen couldn't free the child from above (pictured during the rescue mission). Fire Brigade spokesman Tao Fang told a local newspaper
"It was impossible to get the baby out from above. She had fallen into the toilet and gone down the pipes were she had got stuck between the third and fourth floors. We used an angle grinder to break open the pipeline on the third floor and we could then push the child up to colleagues on the fourth floor where she was handed to medics who were waiting to take her to hospital."
The police tracked down the child's mother who was a student living in the hotel and they took her to the hospita; and who was also taken to hospital. Police say they are waiting to question her before deciding what she might be charged with.

Ebola outbreak: Guinea searches for missing health team

Guinea has sent a team to find missing health officials who were attacked two days ago while visiting a village to raise awareness about Ebola.

Unconfirmed reports suggest they may have been kidnapped or even killed.

The officials had fled Wamey village in Nzerekore region after their group was pelted with stones.

The Ebola outbreak has now killed at least 2,622 people in Guinea, as well as Liberia and Sierra Leone, the World Health Organization says.

It is the world's worst outbreak of the deadly disease, with officials warning that more than 20,000 people could ultimately be infected.

A three-day lockdown is starting in Sierra Leone at 00.00 GMT on Friday in a bid to stop the disease spreading.

Last month, riots erupted in the area of Guinea where the health workers went missing - near where the outbreak was first recorded - following rumours that medics were contaminating people when they started spraying a market to disinfect it.

The missing people are thought to include journalists as well as local officials.

Ebola virus disease (EVD)

Symptoms include high fever, bleeding and central nervous system damage

Spread by body fluids, such as blood and saliva

Current outbreak has mortality rate of about 55%

Incubation period is two to 21 days

There is no proven vaccine or cure

One journalist who escaped during the attack in the village said her colleagues may have been kidnapped because, while she was hiding, she heard the villagers looking for them. This has not been independently confirmed.

Nigeria 'uses torture officers to extract confessions'

Torture has become such an integral part of policing in Nigeria that many stations have an informal torture officer, Amnesty International says.
Both the military and police use a wide range of torture methods including beatings, nail and teeth extractions and other sexual violence, it says.

One woman accused of theft in Lagos said she was sexually assaulted, and had tear gas sprayed into her vagina.

The Nigerian government has not yet responded to the rights group's report.

People told Amnesty about a form of water torture in which hot and cold water is poured on naked bodies
Entitled Welcome to Hell Fire, it says people are often detained in large dragnet operations and tortured as punishment, to extort money or to extract "confessions" as a way to solve cases.

Extrajudicial executions

The use of torture is particularly extreme in the north-east in the war against Boko Haram Islamist militants, Amnesty says.

between 5,000 and 10,000 people have been arrested there since 2009, and executions in overcrowded detention facilities are common.

A teenage boy, pictured at the top, was among 50 people arrested by the army in Pokiskum in Yobe state last year on suspicion being a member of the Boko Haram.

At the time he was 15 years old and spent three weeks in custody in Damaturu and said he was beaten continuously with gun butts, batons and machetes.

Torture chamber testimony: Chinwe in Anambra state

Arrested in 2013 along with other hotel staff after two guns and a human skull were found. They were beaten, detained in a van for hours and then taken to an anti-robbery squad centre in Awkuzu.

"I was thrown inside a cell. I noticed a written sign on the wall 'Welcome to hell fire'… I was taken to the interrogation room.

"There was a police officer at one end with two suspects who were chained together.

"I saw ropes streaming down from the ceiling tops, bags of sand elevated on the perimeter wall fence of the hall and all types of rod and metal in different shapes and sizes.

"I heard shouts and screams from torture victims… I saw buckets of water on standby in case anybody faints or opts to die before appending [their] signature to already written statements."

The officer questioned him, tied his hands and legs, passed a rod between them and elevated him from a perimeter wall. They poured water on him whenever he passed out. He was charged with murder, has since been freed on bail and is awaiting trial.

The boy told Amnesty that melted plastic was poured on his back and he was asked to walk and roll over broken bottles in a hole, and cold water was poured on him and others.

A former soldier who served at Damaturu confirmed that torture was routinely used at the camp.

"An electrified baton is used on a person to make them talk," he told Amnesty.

"They tie people with their hands stretched behind their arms… people kept like that for six or seven hours lose their hands, people kept like that much longer can even die," he said.

Amnesty says the report was compiled using 500 interviews during 20 separate visits to Nigeria since 2007.

"Across the country, the scope and severity of torture inflicted on Nigeria's women, men and children by the authorities supposed to protect them is shocking to even the most hardened human rights observer," Amnesty's Netsanet Belay said in a statement.

The 24-year-old woman sexually assaulted with tear gas says the abuse has left her with a permanent injury.

"A policewoman took me to a small room, told me to remove everything I was wearing. She spread my legs wide and fired tear gas into my vagina… I was asked to confess that I was an armed robber… I was bleeding… up till now I still feel pain in my womb," she said.

Detainees spoke of being suspended upside down by their feet for hours
She has been charged with theft and remains in custody awaiting trial 10 months after her arrest.

Even though torture is prohibited under the constitution, Amnesty notes that Nigeria's politicians have yet to pass a bill to criminalise it.

It says security forces enjoy a climate of impunity and the criminal justice system is riddled with corruption.

Six women have been convicted of operating a "pyramid" scheme in which thousands of investors lost money.

The "Give and Take" scheme operated in south-west England and south Wales five years ago.

The six were all from the Bristol area and each were given a nine month prison sentence. Investigators say more than £20m was invested by about 10,000 members of the public.

Three other women were given suspended sentences for promoting the scheme.

The group encouraged people to "beg, borrow or steal" £3,000 to put into the scheme between May 2008 and April 2009.

It began in Bath and Bristol and spread to Gloucester, Bridgwater, Cheltenham, Torquay, Weston-super-Mare and Wales.

Those running the scheme told its investors it had a quick, easy and legal way to make cash - by paying in £3,000 they would receive more than £20,000, as more members joined.

But eventually the number of new recruits dried up and the scheme collapsed, with 90% of investors loosing their money.

Eleven women, aged between 34 and 69, became the first to be prosecuted for such a scheme, under new legislation in the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Act 2008.

Following two trials in 2012 and 2013, which can now be reported for the first time, three were convicted, three pleaded guilty, one was acquitted and two juries could not reach a verdict on another.

Court proceedings

A third trial was due to begin at Bristol Crown Court on Wednesday. However, the women entered guilty pleas before a jury was sworn in.

Mary Nash, 65, Susan Crane, 68, and Hazel Cameron, 54, will be sentenced in October. All three admitted operating and promoting the pyramid scheme.

Laura Fox, 69, East Harptree, Jennifer Smith-Hayes, 69, of Bishopsworth and Carol Chalmers, 68, of Weston-super-Mare were convicted of operating and promoting the scheme during a trial in 2012.

They were sentenced to nine months in prison.

Sally Phillips, 34, of Hengrove, Jane Smith, 50, of Bishopsworth, both Bristol and Rita Lomas, 49, of Whitchurch, Somerset admitted promoting the scheme in 2012.

Phillips received a three-month suspended prison sentence, Smith a four-month suspended sentence and Lomas a four-and-a-half month suspended sentence.

Two trials of Tracey Laurence, 60, of Bradley Stoke, South Gloucestershire failed to reach a verdict.

Rhalina Yuill, 34, of St George, Bristol was acquitted of promoting a pyramid scheme on her second trial.
