Sound Sultan, Phyno, Gordons, Others take Lagos by storm

Celebrated and popular Nigerian entertainers, Sound Sultan, Phyno, Gordons, and a host of other entertainers took Lagos by storm with their exceptionally superb performances at the Amstel Malta Showtime finale, which held at the Unilag Indoor Sports Hall last week.

The stars featured in the Lagos edition of Amstel Malta Showtime concert drama directed by Ice Nweke tagged “The Rush”, which was a fusion of various artistic displays by ballerinas, singers, actors, fire eaters, jugglers, dancers, rappers, instrumentalists, comedians e.t.c put together to tell the story of a young man’s journey to success in a brilliant theatrical piece.

Also performing with these stars were 5 young talents selected via auditions: Singing duo (male and female); Instrumentalist duo (a violinist and a guitarist), a dance team of four, a comedian and a rapper.

Just as was seen in Enugu, a few other young talents who also impressed the judges but didn’t make it to the top five slots, got the chance to perform during the show.

According to renowned musician, Sound Sultan who also served as a judge and mentor on this season of Showtime, “this experience has been worth every single hype. I’m very glad to be a part of this and I can tell you confidently that Nigeria is blessed with the most unique talents. We saw variety at the auditions both in Enugu and Lagos. So much so that we had an extremely tough time making our final pick and so had to give a number of talents the opportunity to perform even though they didn’t make it to the final 5. Big thumbs up to Amstel Malta for putting this together”, he said.

Amstel Malta Brand Manager, Hannatu Ageni-Yusuf, expressed the brand’s pleasure at the success of the 2014 edition of Showtime.’ This edition of Amstel Malta Showtime has been the most explosive we’ve ever had and we are very glad as a brand that we decided to do this. We thought of a way to give young talents a better opportunity to showcase themselves, rather than just compete and walk home with cash prizes. The mentorship sessions were intense and we are confident that this experience will help launch these talents to the right path in their careers”, she said.

Apart from the amazing opportunity given to them, these young talents also took home cash prizes.

Mom 'used her last breath' to save daughter by hiding her in the toilet as marine father shoots her dead

A mother saved her six-month-old baby with her 'last breath,' sheltering the infant in the toilet after her boyfriend shot her in the head and turned the gun on himself. Jessica Arrendale, 33 (pictured with her baby), was found dead of a gunshot wound to the head along with Antoine Davis (right), 30, who police believe shot himself and Arrendale in a murder-suicide in an Atlanta suburb.

Police had surrounded Arrendale's townhouse. When they finally entered the home, they found the baby safe inside and rushed her to the hospital to treat her for hypothermia.

Officers arrived at the home in Smyrna in the early morning hours Sunday, responding to a call that there was someone in the home armed with a gun.

Arrendale's mother, Teresa Ionniello, told WSB Radio that Arrendale and Davis were together the night that Davis became 'belligerently drunk and abusive,' an episode that sadly had happened many times before in their relationship.

Davis chased Arrendale up to the third floor of her home, where Arrendale picked up a baseball bat to defend herself, according to Ionniello, though Davis overpowered her and struck her with the bat.

Arrendale then barricaded herself in the bathroom with their six-month-old, Cobie. Davis went to get his firearm, an assault rifle, from the closet, and it was around this time that police arrived at the home..

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that police evacuated nearby homes as a precaution and attempted to make contact with the armed man inside.

When officers made the decision to breach the doors around 1:30 p.m., they found the bodies of Arrendale and Davis, both killed by gunshot wounds to the head, Davis's reportedly self-inflicted.
Cobie was found in the toilet bowl, covered by her mother's body but safe and alive. SWAT officers rushed her to the hospital to treat her for hypothermia.

"She had pure will. She wanted that baby to live,' Ionniello said of her daughter. 'Her last breath was saving the child.'

She believes that Davis couldn't see the child in the bowl, and left the bathroom to go into his daughter's room, where he shot himself.

In addition to the couple's five-month-old, Fox 5 reports that Davis's two daughters from a previous marriage, ages 9 and 10, were in the home.
Their mother, Tamaira Chesley, described how one daughter later told her that Davis stared at her for a 'very long time' before she asked him, 'Daddy, what are you doing?'

Chesley says Davis then went upstairs with a gun and the daughter heard Arrendale screaming and then a 'boom.'
'I'm not sure where his depression came from,' Chesley says, but says there was a custody battle over the six-month-old girl.

Davis and Arrendale's six-month-old is still being treated at Children’s Health Care of Atlanta at Scottish Rite Hospital and plans are for Ionniello to take custody of her.

Political campaigns have begun and the first casualty has been recorded in the centre of Lagos politics, the Lagos Island. A popular local politician named Azeez Ashake was shot dead at close range in front of his house at Isale Eko on Saturday September 20th by suspected political thugs.

His son, Usman was also shot but is said to still be alive receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Lagos Island. Azeez Ashake is said to be a strong leader of a particular political group in Lagos Island, and is said to be very influential. His killing caused a lot of chaos in Isale Eko over the weekend, where it's been reported that four people have so far been killed in retaliation for his death. The police tried over the weekend to restore peace to the area. Several policemen and police patrol vans were deployed to the area, but this didn't stop political thugs from fighting at intervals.

Photo: Police hunt man who killed siblings, hacked two in Edo state

The Edo State police command has launched a manhunt for 50 year old Mike Okeze, for allegedly hacking two children to death and viciously attacking two others.

According to a report by Punch, Okeze stormed the home of his neighbour, Oliver Udeh, last Wednesday September 17th in Okha II community, off Old Sapele Road in the Ikpoba-Okha LGA of Edo State, and attacked his children with a machete. He killed Udeh's two children, Destiny (3years) and Samson (6years). He then attacked two other children, Goodness (4years - pictured left) and Gift (8years - pictured right). He severed Goodness' arm and tore the nose of Gift. Continue...

According to the Edo state Police spokesman, Noble Uwoh, Okeze, who is currently on the run, attacked the children inside their home after he had a disagreement with their mother, Chinyere Udeh. He said Okeze immediately fled the scene but a manhunt has been launched by the state Police command
“The suspect murdered the two children in his neighbour’s apartment, following a misunderstanding between him and the Udehs. The man actually had a misunderstanding with the wife and the man went to her house and murdered a six-year-old boy and another three-year-old boy. The same suspect went ahead to inflict injuries on two other children of that woman who are currently undergoing treatment, while two corpses have been deposited in the mortuary. The injured ones are Gift Oliver, eight years, and Goodness Oliver, four years. The suspected killer fled the scene, but investigation is ongoing and efforts are being made to locate and arrest the man. We have launched a manhunt for him.” he said
Speaking about the sad incident, Oliver Udeh, who hails from Enugu state, said Okeze was initially going to attack his wife, Chinyere, but when she ran to get help from Neighbors, he descended on their young children
“The man attacked four of my children with a cutlass. Two died, while the remaining two are at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital. I have six children. My other two boys and my wife escaped from the man. The corpses of the two who died are at the Stella Obasanjo Hospital, Benin. It was my wife that he wanted to kill. But she ran away to call our neighbors. When they arrived at my house, he ran away into the bush and we have yet to find him. I didn’t have any problem with him. But my wife told me that he hated my children. So, when I traveled, he attacked my family with a cutlass and killed two of my children.” he said

hunter fights off killer crocodile by POKING it in the eye

A goose hunter has told of how he managed to escape from the jaws of a crocodile after poking the beast in the eye.

Stephen Moreen, 20, said he had been bitten on the arm and the predator had performed a “death roll” when he took his opportunity and struck it.

He waded into the water in the Northern Territory to retrieve a goose he had shot when he was grabbed and pulled under the water by the crocodile.

But when Mr Moreen jabbed the croc in the eye it remarkably let him go, and his cousin then shot the animal.

Stephen told Australia's ABC channel that he had been 'a little bit tipsy' at the time.

Mr Moreen added: "I wasn't too worried until I saw the scars.
"It made me cry. I'm fine, I'm alive. It could have been bad. It could have got my leg. I was about waist deep.

"I have a scratch on my back, the rest on my arm. He ripped out a bit of skin and left me with two to three holes."

He also said that he drank some more beer to numb the pain while he waited for an ambulance after the attack yesterday in the remote community of Peppimenarti - about 320 kilometres south-west of Darwin.

Blood Ties by Charlyboy

Article Written By Charly boy...

The other day I called a family meeting, in attendance was three of my daughters, two from the United states (Adaeze/Margaret) who have finished their master’s degree, looking for juicy employment, my eldest daughter Yvonne, who more or less runs my business. My first grandchild Olivia who is on vacation from school in Mauritius, my Mum, my last son Charles who runs his own fashion business and doesn't live with me, my younger brothers daughter Nancy waiting to move in with her husband and my wife Lady Di. A house full of women, hummm.
The main crux of the meeting was reinforcing their sense of responsibility as long as they remain in my house and how we need to enhance our bounding and the love we share by doing things that promotes a united family. In short God blessed me with a good family.

Family is something that we cannot do without, everyone existing originated from a family. The general expectation from family is love, help, togetherness. Family gives us a level of safety, whenever we are around them we feel safer…

MTN Project Fame’s unbeatable milestone in UK, US, Canada and Africa

one would be right to affirm that consistency, creativity and professionalism have been the hallmark of the ongoing MTN Project Fame 7.0. Little wonder why the TV broadcast and online channels of the show have gathered a huge global followership in such a short span.  About a week ago, the cumulative views on YouTube hit a stunning figure of 4.7 million. A breakdown of the statistics shows that 1.7 million was recorded this season, with a large chunk of the traffic coming from the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada.

tiwa savage performing at the opening gala.
Interestingly, one of the high points of online followership happened three weeks ago, when Michael Bolton, a popular American singer tweeted at the music academy to wish one of the contestants, Clement Akuoko, good luck. That was an uncommon feat.

Within the Africa continent, in faraway Egypt, South Africa and neighbouring countries like Cameroon and Ghana, according to Malike Dorothy, the publisher of Treasure Diary, a magazine published in Central Africa, the reality show has grown to be a popular family entertainment and the winners are held in high regard. Little wonder, Chidinma Ekile, the Season 3 winner of the musical academy, won the KORA award for the Best Artiste (female category), in 2013, in Abidjan
when the contestants visited the childrens development centre in surulere, lagos

Commendably, the online video view time in minutes has grown to 13 million. This is historical and a testament to how much satisfaction families are deriving from the show in the digital era. With this season producing brilliant performances, week-in week-out, and viewers debating who will emerge the eventual winners between Emeka, Geoffrey, Christian, Ruky, Clement, Debbie, Ugo and Dianella, the total view time is expected to grow exponentially in the days ahead.

That said. The popularity of the show among global audience has made it the biggest in Africa. Its productivity rate in terms of past contestants who made it into mainstream music industry has also made the platform the choice of talented West African youths who aim to make a living through entertainment.

some of the milestones achievement can be traced to the undying passion exhibited by MTN, the reality show’s sponsor. Over the years, MTN has distinguished itself as a brand that seeks to create a better life for its host communities. This, it has made possible through the various platforms it creates to reach out to  the youth whose talents it seeks to nurture either through football and scholarship programmes, dance competitions or music academy like Project Fame.

The years ahead hold so much promise for the viewers and the youth seeking opportunities. The viewers are assured of great entertainment evidence by the passion of Project Fame’s sponsor and the creativity of the production team. The youth will have more opportunities to showcase their musical talent to the world and gain the approval of the reality show’s over 200 million viewing audience distributed around 7 continents.

The finalist, among whom the winners will emerge
You can watch the contestants’ performances, especially their rendition of evergreen African songs, this weekend, and more via (https://www.youtube.com/projectfametv) or by downloading the Reel Africa App or visiting www.reelafrica.net. Reel Africa App is available on MTN App Store, Google Play and Windows App Store. You can also help your favourite contestant to win the competition by texting his or her unique number to 306 or 1745 (in Ghana).

UK hostage's wife in appeal to IS

Alan Henning, from Eccles in Salford, was seized while on an aid mission to Syria last December.

In a statement released via the Foreign Office, his wife Barbara said he had been driving an ambulance stocked with food and water at the time.

Mrs Henning said she had sent messages to IS but had received no response.

The militants issued their threat to kill the 47-year-old in a video released last Saturday which showed the killing of another British man, David Haines.

'Selfless man'

The full statement released from the Henning family read:

"I am Barbara Henning, the wife of Alan Henning.

"Alan was taken prisoner last December and is being held by the Islamic State.

"Alan is a peaceful, selfless man who left his family and his job as a taxi driver in the UK to drive in a convoy all the way to Syria with his Muslim colleagues and friends to help those most in need.

"When he was taken he was driving an ambulance full of food and water to be handed out to anyone in need. His purpose for being there was no more and no less. This was an act of sheer compassion.

"I cannot see how it could assist any state's cause to allow the world to see a man like Alan dying.

"I have been trying to communicate with the Islamic State and the people holding Alan. I have sent some really important messages but they have not been responded to.

"I pray that the people holding Alan respond to my messages and contact me before it is too late.

"When they hear this message I implore the people of the Islamic State to see it in their hearts to release my husband Alan Henning."
