Oscar Pistorius found guilty of culpable homicide

Judge Thokozile Masipa said the athlete acted "negligently" when he fired shots through a toilet door but in the "belief that there was an intruder".

She said the state had failed to prove he intended to kill Reeva Steenkamp.

He was also found guilty on a charge of negligently handling a firearm that went off in a restaurant.

It leaves the disgraced sprinter facing a jail sentence of up to 15 years, although legal experts suggest seven to 10 years is more likely when sentence is passed in a couple of weeks.

Mike Tyson curses out host live on TV after host mentions his rape conviction

The former world champion is currently in Toronto to perform his critically acclaimed one man show 'Mike Tyson: The Undisputed Truth.', and while there, Tyson met with infamous crack smoking Toronto Mayor, Rob Ford.

While promoting his show the next day (on Wednesday morning) on a popular Canadian morning TV talk show, the host, Nathan Downer, asked Mike if it were a good idea for him to meet the Mayor during an election year considering Mike was a convicted rapist, implying that Mike meeting the Mayor could damage the Mayor's reputation. Mike flipped after that.

Mike Tyson called the host a piece of s**t and told him f**k you repeatedly live on air.
"You're being negative.You're really a piece of s--t. F--k you!"
When the host reminded Tyson that he was on live TV, Mike responded, "I don't care. What are you going to do about it?" See the video after the cut...

Oscar Pistorius trial: Murder verdicts ruled out

Judge Thokozile Masipa said the prosecution had failed to prove the Olympic athlete killed his girlfriend deliberately in the toilet after a row, prompting tears from Mr Pistorius.

He cannot have foreseen killing whoever was behind the toilet door, she said.

She added he was an evasive witness but this did not mean he was guilty.

The South African Olympic sprinter denies murdering Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day last year, saying he thought there was an intruder.

Mr Pistorius, 27, has pleaded not guilty to all the charges he faces, including two counts of shooting a firearm in public and the illegal possession of ammunition.

'Facts wrong'

Judge Masipa began by detailing the charges against the athlete and repeating extracts of his testimony, reading in a slow, measured way.

She then moved on to a summary of the trial.

A tense-looking Mr Pistorius looked on from the dock, and wept several times during the proceedings.

The judge questioned the reliability of several witnesses who apparently heard screams and gunshots at the time of the incident, saying most of those who said they had heard the incident had "got facts wrong".

The prosecution had used these witnesses to try to prove that Mr Pistorius had killed Ms Steenkamp with premeditation after an argument.

Later in her judgement, Judge Masipa concluded that the prosecution had failed in this.

"The state has not proved beyond reasonable doubt that the accused is guilty of premeditated murder," she said. "There are just not enough facts to support such a finding."

The judge added that the accused believed his life was in danger and therefore could not be found guilty of a lesser charge of murder.

Oscar Pistorius trial: Judge delivering verdict

The judge in the Oscar Pistorius trial has begun delivering her verdict on the athlete, a process that may take hours.
The Olympic double-amputee sprinter faces 25 years in jail if found guilty of premeditated murder.

He denies intentionally killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day last year, saying he thought there was an intruder.

The judge could also find him guilty of culpable homicide, or manslaughter, for which he would face a long jail term.

Mr Pistorius, 27, has pleaded not guilty to all the charges he faces, including two counts of shooting a firearm in public and the illegal possession of ammunition.

Judge Thokosile Masipa began by detailing the charges against the athlete and repeating extracts of his testimony, reading in a slow, measured way.

She then moved on to a summary of the trial.

A tense-looking Mr Pistorius looked on from the dock.

Correspondents say the judge appeared to be moving much more quickly than expected through the evidence, in a process which had been expected take hours or even days.

During his closing remarks last month, his lawyer Barry Roux conceded that the athlete should be found guilty of negligence for discharging a firearm in a restaurant - which carries a maximum penalty of five years.

Syringe Used to Attack Air Marshal in Lagos, Tests Negative for Ebola

A syringe used to attack a  U.S. air marshal waiting for a flight from Lagos, Nigeria to Houston, Texas was tested and found to be negative for Ebola according to the FBI.
The assault happened at the Lagos airport Sunday night. The unnamed air marshal was stabbed in the back of the arm with the syringe while passing through the airport. Another air marshal traveling with him was able to secure the syringe and return it on the flight. The air marshals were met in Houston by the FBI and CDC. An FBI spokesman confirmed to Breitbart News that the syringe was tested for Ebola and other unspecified toxins but all of the tests were negative.

The CDC confirmed that the air marshal showed no signs of illness during the flight or when he arrived in Houston. He was transported to an area hospital for further evaluation. CDC says at this time there is no indication of any threat of infection to other passengers who were on the flight.
The FBI has begun an investigation of the incident but did not give out any detail about the attacker who managed to evade the other marshals and escape. Asked how someone would have known the victim was an air marshal, the FBI spokesman said simply they could not have known. However, it's possible the marshal was targeted simply because he was dressed as a westerner.

A Russian student Admits Making explosives

Vladimir Aust, 18, was arrested in London after the evacuation in June of a bus station and a language school at Newcastle University, where he studied.

A controlled explosion was carried out on a recovered substance.

Aust of Haymarket Lane, Newcastle, who appeared in court via videolink, will be sentenced next month.

The charge related to making hexamethylene triperoxide diamine (HMTD) - often used in the mining industry - at some point between 1 September 2013 and 11 June 2014, Newcastle Crown Court heard.

A charge of carrying two knives near the Russian embassy in London was dropped by the prosecution.

The alerts in June caused disruption in Newcastle city centre, with the bus station and part of the university being evacuated.

Bomb disposal officers used a robot to search the university's INTO language building.

Newcastle University caters for more than 22,000 UK and international students and has 1,200 academic staff.

Dettol Supports Ministry of Health with N220m for Public Enlightenment Campaign

Dettol, one of Reckitt Benckiser’s brands, has announced a partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health on a public enlightenment campaign to fight the spread of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) through personal hygiene.

The partnership, which is valued at N220 million, was made known at a ministerial media briefing by the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, in Abuja yesterday.

The minister, however, clarified that the partnership support fund was not to be given to the ministry of health in cash but that the sum of money was what would be spent by Reckitt Benckiser on the various phases of the public enlightenment campaign.

Marketing Director, West Africa, Reckitt Benckiser, Mr. Oguzhan Silivrili, while addressing the media stated that as part of Reckitt Benckiser’s numerous Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, the company has decided to partner the Federal Ministry of Health using Dettol to enlighten Nigerians on how to prevent Ebola through the cultivation of proper hygiene habits.

Father posed as 16-year-old boy to groom underage girls online

Donald Kerr was found to have stored more than ten hours of video "selfies" of young girls on his computer along with more than 1300 indecent images of children.

Kerr, who turned 48 on Tuesday, admitted posing as a teenage boy on the internet site Tagged.com so he could contact under age girls and groom them.

Fiscal depute Carol Whyte told Perth Sheriff Court: "Police received intelligence which led to a search of his home address. He was traced with his daughter."

She said Kerr immediately confessed to having illegal material on his computer when officers told him that his daughter would have been questioned about the material otherwise.

"He said there would be pictures on the computer tower that people had sent him, of naked girls of all ages. He said he had started by going on websites and looking at pornography and had just kept progressing to the next stage.

"He stated it was like a habit, an addiction, and he stated that he hadn't thought he would become something like that. He stated he just looked at pictures and nothing else.

"However, further investigations established that he had been communicating with a 15-year-old girl while posing as a 16-year-old youth called "Don".

Mrs Whyte said: "When asked about the ages of the people in the pictures, he stated he probably knew they were between '13 and whatever.' When asked how he knew the ages, he replied that they had told him.

"He confirmed he had taken pictures of other people and set up a profile pretending to be 16 years old. He confirmed he had used Tagged.com to chat to girls."

"The 15-year-old girl told officers she had communicated online with 'Don' between August and November 2011. The conversation had been general at first.

"But after two days he asked her to send pictures of herself in underwear or less, to speak to him on the webcam and to strip for him, to send a video showing her pleasuring herself and requested that she sleep with him."

Mrs Whyte told the court Kerr was found to have 237 different videos on his computer, with a running time of approximately ten hours in total. They included level four and five footage - the most graphic. He also had 1326 still images.

Kerr, Crammond Place, Perth, admitted that between August 1 and November 30, 2011 he intentionally sent sexual written communication to a 15-year-old girl.

He admitted asking her for sexually explicit pictures via webcam and asking her to meet him to have sexual intercourse.

He also admitted a second charge of having indecent images of children at his home between January 18 and June 27, 2012.

Solicitor John McLaughlin, defending, said Kerr had never actually met the girl he had groomed, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

Kerr's sentence was deferred for the preparation of reports and he was placed on the sex offenders register by sheriff Fiona Tait.

Ebola outbreak 'threatens Liberia's national existence'

Liberia is facing a "serious threat" to its national existence as the deadly Ebola virus "spreads like wildfire" there, its defence minister says.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that thousands more cases could occur in Liberia, which has been worst hit by the West Africa outbreak.

Some 2,288 people have died from Ebola in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

The WHO says half of these deaths occurred in the three weeks running up to 6 September.

In Nigeria, eight people have died out of a total 21 cases, while one case has been confirmed in Senegal, with no deaths.
More than 1,000 people have already died from the virus in Liberia alone

Apple has unveiled a smartwatch

The device runs apps, acts as a health and fitness tracker and communicates with the iPhone.

Although many companies already sell competing products, experts note that Apple has a history of entering sectors relatively late and then changing their direction with influential devices of its own.

Apple also unveiled two new handsets that are larger than previous models.

The iPhone 6's screen measures 4.7in (11.9cm) and iPhone Plus 5.5in (14.0cm) - a change that analysts said should help it prevent users migrating to Android.

It also announced a new service called Apple Pay, which chief executive Tim Cook said he hoped would "replace the wallet" in shops.

Watch apps

The Apple Watch is controlled by what Apple calls a "digital crown" - a dial on its side that allows content on its screen to be magnified or otherwise changed, and also be pressed inwards to act as a home button.

The display is a touchscreen that can detect the difference between a light tap and heavier pressure from the user's fingers. In addition, the device runs Siri - Apple's voice-controlled "personal assistant".

It offers a variety of different watchfaces, can alert the user to notifications, act as a heart rate monitor and show maps.

Apple said that apps could also be processed on an iPhone, but displayed on the watch in order to extend battery life.

Cops identify bullies who poured urine, feces on autistic teen in sick Ice Bucket Challenge

Police in Ohio have identified the twisted pranksters who dumped a bucket of urine and feces on an autistic teen as part of a fake Ice Bucket Challenge and are in the process of turning the investigation over to prosecutors.

Bay Village Police Chief Mark Spaetzel said Monday that five people were involved in sick scheme to dupe the 15-year-old boy, but no arrests have been made and it wasn't yet clear if anyone would be charged.

"We can't speculate on potential charges as the investigation is not yet complete, but ultimately it will be up to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office to determine appropriate charges," Spaetzel said in an email to BuzzFeed.

10 Health Benefits Of Marijuana

1:It can be used to treat Glaucoma.
Marijuana use can be used to treat and prevent the eye disease glaucoma, which increases pressure in the eyeball, damaging the optic nerve and causing loss of vision.

Marijuana decreases the pressure inside the eye, according to the National Eye Institute: "Studies in the early 1970s showed that marijuana, when smoked, lowered intraocular pressure (IOP) in people with normal pressure and those with glaucoma."

These effects of the drug may slow the progression of the disease, preventing blindness.

2:It can help control epileptic seizures.
Marijuana use can prevent epileptic seizures, a 2003 study showed.

Robert J. DeLorenzo, of Virginia Commonwealth University, gave marijuana extract and synthetic marijuana to epileptic rats. The drugs rid the rats of the seizures for about 10 hours. Cannabinoids like the active ingredients in marijuana, tetrahydrocannabinol (also known as THC), control seizures by binding to the brain cells responsible for controlling excitability and regulating relaxation.

3:A chemical found in marijuana stops cancer from spreading.
CBD may help prevent cancer from spreading, researchers at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco reported in 2007.

Cannabidiol stops cancer by turning off a gene called Id-1, the study, published in the journal Molecular Cancer Therapeutics, found. Cancer cells make more copies of this gene than non-cancerous cells, and it helps them spread through the body.

The researchers studied breast cancer cells in the lab that had high expression levels of Id-1 and treated them with cannabidiol. After treatment the cells had decreased Id-1 expression and were less aggressive spreaders.

In "WEED," Gupta also mentioned a few studies in the U.S., Spain, and Israel that suggest the compounds in cannabis could even kill cancer cells.

4:Marijuana slows the progression of alzheimer's disease

Marijuana may be able to slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease, a study led by Kim Janda of the Scripps Research Institute suggests.

The 2006 study, published in the journal Molecular Pharmaceutics, found that THC, the active chemical in marijuana, slows the formation of amyloid plaques by blocking the enzyme in the brain that makes them. These plaques are what kill brain cells and cause Alzheimer's.

5:The drug eases the pain of multiple sclerosis.

AP/Matilde Campodonico

Marijuana may ease painful symptoms of multiple sclerosis, a study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal in May suggests.

Jody Corey-Bloom studied 30 multiple sclerosis patients with painful contractions in their muscles. These patients didn't respond to other treatments, but after smoking marijuana for a few days they were in less pain.

The THC in the pot binds to receptors in the nerves and muscles to relieve pain. Other studies suggest that the chemical also helps control the muscle spasms.

6:It lessens side effects from treating hepatitis C and increases treatment effectiveness.

California dispensaries have been the subject of federal raids
Treatment for hepatitis C infection is harsh — negative side effects include fatigue, nausea, muscle aches, loss of appetite, and depression — and lasts for months. Many people aren't able to finish their treatment course because of the side effects.

But, pot to the rescue: A 2006 study in the European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology found that 86% of patients using marijuana successfully completed their Hep C therapy, while only 29% of non-smokers completed their treatment, possibly because the marijuana helps lessens the treatments side effects.

Marijuana also seems to improve the treatment's effectiveness: 54% of hep C patients smoking marijuana got their viral levels low and kept them low, in comparison to only 8% of nonsmokers.

7:Marijuana treats inflammatory bowel diseases.

Patients with inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis could benefit from marijuana use, studies suggest.

University of Nottingham researchers found in 2010 that chemicals in marijuana, including THC and cannabidiol, interact with cells in the body that play an important role in gut function and immune responses.

8:It relieves arthritis discomfort.AP Photo/Kevin Rivoli

Marijuana alleviates pain, reduces inflammation, and promotes sleep, which may help relieve pain and discomfort for people with rheumatoid arthritis.

9:It keeps you skinny and helps your metabolism.
Journal Of Medicine on April 15 of last year suggested that pot smokers are skinnier than the average person and have healthier metabolism and reaction to sugars, even though they do end up eating more calories because of the munchies.

The study analyzed data from more than 4,500 adult Americans — 579 of whom were current marijuana smokers, meaning they had smoked in the last month. About 2,000 had used marijuana in the past, while another 2,000 had never used the drug.

They studied their body's response to eating sugars: their levels of the hormone insulin and their blood sugar levels while they hadn't eaten in nine hours, and after eating sugar.

Not only are pot users skinnier, but their body has a healthier response to sugar.

10:while not really a health benefit, marijuana spurs creativity in the brain.
marijuana usage has actually been shown to have some positive mental effects, particularly in terms of increasing creativity. Even though people's short-term memories tend to function worse when high, people get better at tests requiring them to come up with new ideas.

Xo people marijuana iznt really bad for your health like most of u fink.

Miley Cyrus Says Social Media Is More Harmful Than Drugs

In an interview with chris beth miley was asked if she knows that drugs could hurt her brain.

Miley cyrus replied:
“Do you know what hurts your brain? Googling yourself. You know what hurts your brain? Instagram. You know what hurts your brain? Sitting there and reading the comments on Facebook. I have a 14-year-old sister and I go through her comments and people are calling her a slut and that’s a 14-year-old. So I think that’s hurting your brain,

“I put pictures of me smoking weed, I’m not going to lie, on my Instagram because I was brought up in the way that we never thought marijuana was bad.”

Policeman Takes Selfie In Front Of Man About To Commit Suicide

A Turkish police officer was snapped taking a picture of himself with a man about to jump to his death right behind him. As opposed to helping, the officer decided to capture this moment with a selfie, as apparently the Policeman thought the backdrop was too beautiful to be forgotten.

The event took place in Ankara, the Turkish capital.

A 35-year-old man was preparing to jump off a bridge, reportedly motivated by financial problems.

Within seconds of the police offer taking the selfie, the man jumped almost 600 feet to his death.

Police spokesman Maksud Calik said:

“It was his third suicide attempt. Highly trained negotiators were trying to talk him into coming back onto the bridge when he suddenly let go and fell.
But many say the cop’s shameful insensitivity could have been the final push finally to go through with the act.”

The police officer’s conduct is currently being investigated to determine any “breach of duty.”

Suspected Boko Haram fighters killed by army

At least 50 suspected Boko Haram fighters have been killed in a military raid in Borno state, the Nigerian army has said.

The army said on Sunday that security forces raided a hideout of suspected Boko Haram members in the Kawuri village, about 37km from the state capital Maiduguri, on Saturday.

The suspected fighters were planning an imminent attack, the military said.

Heavy artillery, including anti-aircraft, and an armoured vehicle were seized in the raid. Three soldiers were injured in the operation.

AU troops accused of raping Somali women

AMISOM says report claiming soldiers assaulted girls as young as 12 and traded food aid for sex "unbalanced and unfair".

Internationally funded African Union troops in Somalia have gang-raped women and girls as young as 12 and traded food aid for sex, Human Rights Watch, the US-based rights group, says.

The 22,000 AU force, called AMISOM, with soldiers drawn from six nations, have been fighting alongside government troops against the al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab fighters since 2007.

"Some of the women who were raped said that the soldiers gave them food or money afterwards in an apparent attempt to frame the assault as transactional sex," HRW said in a report on Monday.

AMISOM said the alleged rapes were "isolated" incidents and called the report "unbalanced and unfair".

The vulnerable women largely came from camps in the capital Mogadishu, having fled rural Somalia during a devastating famine in 2011.

AMISOM donors include the EU and the US.

The AU soldiers, "relying on Somali intermediaries, have used a range of tactics, including humanitarian aid, to coerce vulnerable women and girls into sexual activity", the report read, based on testimonies of 21 women and girls.

"They have also raped or otherwise sexually assaulted women who were seeking medical assistance or water at AMISOM bases."

The youngest interviewed was aged just 12, who said she was raped by a Ugandan soldier.

Royal baby: Duke and duchess 'thrilled' over pregnancy

Prince William says he and the Duchess of Cambridge are "thrilled" they are expecting their second child.

Speaking at a visit to Oxford University the duke said it had been a "tricky few days" but was "great news".

The couple's second baby will become fourth in line to the throne, behind 13-month-old Prince George.

MH370 relatives mark six months on

In Beijing, about 30 relatives gathered at one of the Chinese capital's most famous Buddhist temples.

Some cried as a man read a poem, and tempers flared when police tried to move people on, a BBC reporter says.

No trace of the Beijing-bound aircraft has been found since it disappeared on 8 March, carrying 239 people.

Based on analysis of satellite data, MH370 is believed to have ended its journey in seas far west of the Australian city of Perth.

Investigators do not know what happened to the flight, however, and finding its "black box" flight recorders is seen as key to understanding the factors behind its disappearance.
Teams are now preparing to search a 60,000 square km priority area in the Indian Ocean, using towed deep water vehicles equipped with side scan sonar, multi-beam echo sounders and video cameras.

At the moment the ocean floor is being mapped to facilitate the underwater search, which will begin later this month.

The agency co-ordinating the search says it remains "cautiously optimistic" the plane will be found.
Acting search chief Judith Zielke told the BBC that experts were continuing to refine the priority search area, based on data analysis.

"The purpose of prioritising the area and therefore the ongoing refinement is to try to cut to where we should be looking first to make sure we can locate the aircraft as quickly as possible," she said.

Earlier this month Australia said the focus would move to the south of the area, after analysis of a failed attempted satellite phone call from Malaysia Airlines to the plane found the aircraft may have turned south earlier than thought.

Experts led by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau were finalising that latest analysis, Ms Zielke said.

"What we are continuing to do is move the equipment further south from the priority area to continue to look at the ocean floor, to map the contours of the floor and understand how best to plan the search with the deep sea equipment that will commence later this month," she said.

A Dutch contractor, Fugro Survey, will carry out the deep sea search once the mapping phase is complete.

Project manager Paul Kennedy told the BBC the mapping had highlighted areas of complexity on the sea floor, which ranged in depth from 975m to around 5,500m.

This data would help when repositioning the towed underwater equipment so as to avoid obstacles on the sea floor, he said.

The underwater search is expected to take up to 12 months to complete, Australia says.

Meet the woman with the world's biggest HANDS

Duangjay Samaksamam, 59, has spent the past 50 years living with an extremely rare and painful condition that has left her limbs permanently swollen.

Her affliction means that moving can be agonising and even the simplest of tasks, such as combing her hair, can prove extremely difficult.

"My hands are so heavy I can barely lift them to comb or shampoo my hair, it's very difficult," she said.

"Getting dressed is also very difficult and painful.

"Some doctors said the only solution was to cut off my hands if I wished to walk around freely.

"But I don't want to do that."

Ms Samaksamam, from Thailand's Surin Province, was raised in a rural village where there were no medical experts to help her.

Ashamed by her gigantic limbs, she spent the first 20 years of her life as a recluse because she could not face going out in public.

This meant that she never went to school and never married.

She was eventually forced to come out of hiding at the age of 20 to help provide for her elderly parents - who could no longer work - by taking over the family grocery shop.

Gauteng police are calling on parents to be more vigilant, with a need to know where their children are at all times especially after dark.

This follows the discovery of yet another child murder in the province.

The body of five-year-old Madira Selota was found by community members in Tembisa on Saturday, not far from her parent's home.

The child had been missing since Sunday, when she'd gone out to buy chips at a nearby spaza shop.

Family members are distraught -- they say they didn’t receive any assistance from the media during the search for their child.

They also believe police could have done more, but SAPS spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini insists all channels were exhausted in the search.

He  believes the perpetrator lives in the community.

Police are offering a reward for information that could help solve the case. They have also pleaded with the public not to take the law into their own hands.

Meanwhile, the community has been flocking to the home of the Selato’s to offer condolences, as the family makes plans for their daughter's burial next weekend.

The little girl's funeral is planned for next week.

American Doctor With Ebola 'Slightly Improved'

The latest American doctor to be infected with Ebola in West Africa is "slightly improved,"
his wife said after visiting him in a Nebraska hospital today.

SIM missionary Dr. Rick Sacra, who contracted EbolaVirus Disease in Liberia, arrived in Nebraska Friday and was brought to the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

His wife, Debbie, and her oldest son Maxwell, 22, visited Sacra -- isolated in the hospital's biocontainment unit -- for about 25 minutes over a video link.

"Rick is very sick and weak, but slightly improved from when he arrived yesterday," Debbie Sacra said. "He asked for something to eat and had a little chicken soup."

She said he did not remember much from the trip, and that the priority now is for him is to rest.

She said she was "relieved to see his face and hear his voice again."

She said she and her husband were most interested in keeping the focus on the Ebola crisis in West Africa.

"We don't want this story to be about Rick," she said. "The story is the crisis in West Africa. That is what is most important. The world is coming to this fight late."

Sacra, 51, was treating pregnant women in the ELWA Hospital in Monrovia, Liberia, when he became infected with the deadly virus, according to SIM, an international, interdenominational Christian organization based in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Sacra, an assistant professor at University of Massachusetts Medical School, was not treating Ebola patients in the hospital's separate Ebola isolation facility, the group said, adding that it was unclear how he contracted the virus. All infected U.S. health workers were working at the ELWA hospital when they contracted the virus.

He was isolated in the ELWA Ebola ward after becoming infected.

Sacra specializes in family medicine and practices in Worcester, Massachusetts, but he traveled to Liberia in August.

"I knew he needed to go," Debbie Sacra said, adding that he knew there was a risk he would contract Ebola but he wanted to help people with malaria and pregnant women amid the outbreak.

"He is not someone who can stand back when there is a need that he can take care of," she said.

Sacra is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts Medical School and spent nearly two decades working in Liberia, according to the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Sacra's colleagues at the medical school called him a "gifted physician" who took on extra work to treat pregnant women in the rural country.

Ukraine crisis: Ceasefire shaken by fresh shelling

There has been fresh shelling near Donetsk airport in eastern Ukraine, raising fears that Friday's ceasefire may collapse.

The truce held for much of Saturday but shelling in Mariupol, which killed one woman, was followed by the Donetsk airport blasts early on Sunday.

The truce and 12-point peace roadmap was signed at talks involving Ukraine, Russia, separatist rebels and the OSCE.

Fighting in the east has left some 2,600 people dead since April.

On Sunday, Ukrainian security official Volodymyr Poliovyi said 864 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed since the conflict began.

Russia has repeatedly denied accusations by Ukraine and the West that it has been sending troops into Ukraine's eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions to help the rebels, who want to establish an independent state.

Bear Chases Bow Hunter up Tree, Bites His Leg

A bow-hunter was attacked by a bear while looking for deer near the southwest Washington city of Longview.

The 61-year-old Longview man, Jerry Hause, tells The Daily News (http://bit.ly/1oMQysG) he was sitting down to take a rest Monday when the bear came at him at a dead run.

Hause says he didn't have time to use his bow so he scrambled up a tree. The bear followed him and bit his left leg. It finally let go when Hause kicked it in the nose with his other foot.

Hause was able to walk out and call for help. He was treated for puncture wounds and claw scratches at a hospital and is recovering at home.

Hause says the next time he goes bow hunting, he plans to carry a pistol.

Ebola: Health Minister Says Disease Will Soon Be Stamped Out o Nigeria

The Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu, has said that he is confident that the Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria will be taken care of.

Professor Chukwu, who led a delegation from the Ministry of Health to Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, on Friday to ascertain the level of work done by the Ebola response team in the state, said that doctors were assisting Ebola virus patients by replacing their lost fluid to get well .

“The electrolyte you have lost is replaced. We need to ensure that if you need blood, we give you blood transfusion. Ebola virus can be managed, it is not a death sentence,” Professor Chukwu said.’

Chukwu added, however, that the virus does not have a specific drug yet and that many diseases were like that.

“We have not been able to get a reliable vaccine. So, all the vaccines are going through clinical trials.

“Hopefully, we will get one soon. But, for now, we don’t have,  but we do manage,”  he said.

Received by members of the Ebola response team in the state led by the Commissioner of Health, Samson Parker, the Minister’s first assignment was to visit the treatment centre at Oduha, Emohua Local Government Area, before proceeding to the National Disease Control Centre in the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital in Choba to take a look at the mobile testing laboratory centre where blood samples could be tested for the virus.

He said what he saw was of world class standard.

The Minister confirmed that it was just one case of Ebola virus patient that was in the treatment centre in Rivers State, who is the sister of the late doctor.

He further stated that 18 cases of the disease were registered in the country so far, eight of which have been discharged

“The government is on top of the situation and we will do our best to make sure that we stamp out the disease,” he said.

“Ebola is not a death sentence and can be managed.” That is the message the Ministry of Health in Rivers State and the Federal Government hope will get to Nigerians, as the fight against the virus intensifies.

Man with an UPSIDE DOWN head defies all odds to become public speaker

The 37-year-old was given a zero chance of survival after he was born with the astonishing condition, but he has defied medical odds to become an inspirational public speaker.

Claudio suffers from various disabilities, including badly deformed legs, almost no use of his arms and hands and his neck folded back on itself.

Doctors had given up hope of his survival shortly after his birth and even told his mother, Maria Jose, to stop feeding him.

But this inspirational man, from Monte Santo, Brazil, has proven them all wrong by overcoming his extreme disadvantages to graduate from university as an accountant and become a public speaker.

He said: "Since I was a child I've always liked to keep myself busy and work - I don't like to depend totally on other people.

"I do a bit of accounting, research for clients and consulting.

"I have learned to turn on the TV, pick up my cell phone, turn on the radio, use the internet, my computer - I do it all by myself."

Sierra Leone declares Ebola lockdown

Sierra Leone - one of the countries worst hit by West Africa's Ebola outbreak - has announced a three-day lockdown to try to tackle the disease.

From 19 to 21 September people will not be allowed to leave their homes, a senior official said.

The aim of the move is to allow health workers to isolate new cases to prevent the disease from spreading further.

The outbreak has killed about 2,100 people in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea and Nigeria in recent months.

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Friday that health workers could be given vaccines as from November, when safety tests are completed.

More than 20 health workers have lost their lives to the virus in Sierra Leone since the start of the outbreak in March

Omotola Speaks About Her Life And Character

36-year-old Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has been recently confirmed Nigeria’s most popular female entertainer on the internet, with the highest number of social media followers on Twitter and Facebook, Nigeriafilms recalls.

Omosexy, as she is gently referred to by her fans, has achieved a lot not only in her professional, but also in private life. The happy wife has managed to keep the wonderful shape despite having delivered 4 (!) children.

When asked about how she had been able to keep fit, the actress said:

“First and foremost, I use the power of the tongue. I look at the mirror and say to myself ‘You are slim; you are losing weight in all the right places.’ It’s funny, right? But then, also, I try to eat healthy, and I’m very active. I have just started working out with a trainer, but prior to that I just stay active.”

Omotola got married in 1996 but has never become the casual-clothes woman. She keeps wearing tight and elegant dresses proving over and over again that she is not just Omo, but OmoSEXY. When asked about her style of clothing, whether her husband is satisfied with it, she said:

“My husband is extremely in support. I can’t even wear some clothes my husband approves of. People would think I’m crazy, they would read meaning into our relationship. He is a very enlightened person and someone who believes in his heart. Even with our kids, he trusts them so much.”

And the actress eagerly continued with praising her second half for being a gentle, supportive and understanding man:

“I bless God, it’s been wonderful. God has been very good and I give the glory to Him. And secondly, I’d give credit to my husband. Because, I think I’m the difficult one, because of the demands of my career and because I’m the woman. But he’s been extremely supportive.”

Although Omotola’s working schedule is even tighter that her dresses, she still dedicates every free minute of her life to the family and to the upbringing of her children. The actress however confesses she is a strict kind of parent.

“I am a very hands-on Mum. My kids would tell you I’m extremely strict also, because I was trained by a very strict Mum. My Mum was an Egba woman; she used to sit on me. When they say I’m very strict, I say ‘You’re lucky I don’t sit on you.’ I use most of the doctrines in the Bible; I’m always in their business.”

This statement can be proved by the incident which happened this year, when the photos of Omotola’s daughter went viral. The actress attacked media over describing her 14-year-old daughter’s as “hot” and “sexy”.

Speaking about her children, Omotola recalled the times when she was still a child narrated how the loss of father at the age of 12 affected her life:

“I was extremely close to him and it really affected me because, for a long time I was thinking I would die, too. I felt so much grief and it was a lot of strain on my mother because she had three kids to cater for and didn’t want our standard of living to drop. I wanted to help her, so after I left secondary school I started modelling.”

The actress also revealed the peculiarities of her character and explained why some people might allege she is snobbish:

“I guess I have this demeanour that makes me look like I’m in my own zone. People just assume that I’m a snob. Sometimes I really could enter into my own zone, and it depends on where I am. If I’m in a place where the air is too stiff for me, I just become very quiet. But if I get to a place and feel the vibe and it’s free and fun, you are virtually going to beg me to sit in one place. I’m too extreme; I can be overly bubbly and overly quiet. I’m never really in the middle and I can’t pretend.”

The interview concluded with the correspondent asking whether Omo feels threatened by the upcoming beautiful and talented actresses, to which she responded:

“I’m not the most intelligent, I’m not the best actress either, and I don’t think I have the best attitude, but I always ask God for His grace. There are new challenges everyday and I ask God to teach me. You have to always remember there is nothing special about you, it’s just His grace. What you think you have somebody else probably even have double. There are younger, new, hotter, more aggressive people around now. I just try to be myself, work hard, and rely on what can take me far.”

Result from suspected Ebola patients in Ghana comes in negative

Seven suspected cases of Ebola Viral Disease (EVD) in the Brong Ahafo Region and blood samples tested have proved negative.

Four of the cases were recorded in the Tain District and one each in Dormaa Central Municipal, Tano South and Jaman South Districts.

Dr Kofi Issah, Brong Ahafo Regional Deputy Director of Public Health announced this at the Brong Ahafo Regional Epidemic Committee Meeting in Sunyani on Thursday.

It was to update on EVD and Cholera outbreak and response measures in the Region.

He said in Ghana 70 suspected Ebola cases have been recorded so far and all proved negative.

Dr Issah advised health workers and stakeholders to ensure they provided the general public with authentic information which is evidence based in order not to create fear and panic, adding “We have suspected, probable and confirmed cases on ebola”.

He pointed out that Ebola outbreak occurs mostly in the tropical rain forest region and according to the World Health Organization (WHO) it will take about nine months to bring the situation under control.

On measures to check Ebola in the region, Dr Issah said Ebola Response Team has been constituted and waiting for formal training by a team from the WHO.

Others are meetings with the Health Management Teams in the Municipalities and Districts and the Brong Ahafo Regional Coordinating Council on EVD response and the establishment of surveillance systems made up of volunteers at the campuses of three tertiary institutions in the Region to report signs and symptoms of suspected cases to the Regional Health Directorate.

The institutions are, Catholic University College of Ghana (CUCG) at Fiapre, University of Energy and Natural Resources (UERN) in Sunyani and Sunyani Polytechnic.

The rest are routine briefing for the mass media and stakeholders, electronic media discussions, distribution of leaflets, posters and other educational materials.

Dr Issah urged the Ghana Education Service (GES) to sensitize teachers and other stakeholders in education before schools re-open to be abreast with the signs and symptoms of Ebola and Cholera.

He stressed the need for health professionals and workers to be constantly alert not only on Ebola and Cholera but other diseases in the communities.

Dr Issah pointed out that the measures being instituted nation-wide are not only for Ebola and Cholera but to ensure health systems are maintained for other diseases.

“Outbreak of diseases occurs through weak health systems, while strong health systems prevent the outbreak of diseases,” he added.

On Cholera, Dr Issah said the cases have increased from five in the beginning of August to 31 and one death in nine Municipal and Districts in the Region by the end of the month.

Atebubu-Amanten District recorded eight cases, Nkoranza South Municipal and Techiman Municipal seven cases each, while three cases and one death was recorded in Asutifi South District.

Sunyani East Municipal, Berekum Municipal, Asunafo North Municipal, Wenchi Municipal, Nkoranza North, and Techiman North District recorded one case each.

Dr Issah pointed out that in tackling diseases, stakeholders should watch human behaviour and cited a case in which a Cholera patient travelled from Cape Coast to Berekum and finally ended at Asunafo North Municipality. GNA

3rd American Ebola patient arrives U.S for treatment

The third American aid worker sickened with Ebola is a Boston-area doctor who decided to return to Liberia after the two others fell ill with the deadly virus, the president of his missionary group said Wednesday.

Dr. Rick Sacra, of Holden, Massachusetts, went back to Liberia about a month ago and was not caring for Ebola patients, instead delivering babies at the missionary group’s hospital in Liberia, SIM President Bruce Johnson said at a news conference

When a fellow SIM worker and another missionary doctor became sick, Sacra called and said, “I’m ready to go,” Johnson said.

SIM needed doctors to take care of patients not infected with Ebola, said Will Elthick, director of SIM’s operations in Liberia. Sacra followed all protocols to protect himself, Elthick said, and he’s in good spirits and able to email.

Dr. Gregory Culley, Sacra’s supervisor in Massachusetts, says Sacra has been going back and forth between the Family Health Center in Worcester and a hospital in Monrovia for almost two decades.

“Dr. Sacra is probably the closest thing that a living human-being can be to being a saint,” Culley told WBUR. “He is a first-class physician, he is a dedicated missionary.”

SIM does not know whether Sacra, who is in isolation, will return to the U.S. for treatment, as the other two Americans did, Johnson said.

Dr. Bruce Ribner, who oversaw the first two missionaries’ treatment at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, told NBC’s “Today” show that he also does not know whether the third patient will come there.

“I know there have been discussions that this person will be coming back to the United States,” Ribner, head of the hospital’s infectious disease unit, said. “I don’t believe the actual site where they’re coming back has been decided yet.”

Dr. Kent Brantly, the first Ebola patient to arrive at Emory, said he knew the latest American to fall ill quite well and has prayed for him and his family, whom he said were “holding up pretty well.” Brantly worked for Samaritan’s Purse, a missionary group that partners with SIM in Liberia. Both are based in North Carolina.

Nancy Writebol, the second American sickened, said she believes an experimental drug, her medical care and her faith helped save her.

“Those were some very, very dark days,” Writebol, 59, said of her illness.

Brantly  and Writebol were both released last month. Writebol has been spending time with her husband at an undisclosed location. Her husband was quarantined for a week at the SIM campus before being released.

The virus that has killed more than 1,500 people in West Africa is spread by direct contact with blood or bodily fluids, not through casual contact.

Australian boy wakes from a coma after a horrifying car crash speaking fluent MANDARIN (but had completely forgotten English)

Two years ago Ben McMahon woke up from a coma more than a week after a horrific car crash that almost claimed his life only being able to speak Mandarin.

The 22-year-old remembers how he woke up and saw a nurse who looked Asian standing by his bed and said to her 'Excuse me nurse, I feel really sore here' in Chinese.

He then asked the nurse for a piece of paper and pen and he wrote on it in Mandarin: 'I love my mum, I love my dad, I will recover.'
His new-found language skills baffled his doctors as well as his parents.

Ben's father, Mark, and his mother were told it would be a miracle if their son survived.

'We got the call from the hospital and [the hospital staff member] was saying "Oh Mark, look I just wanted to ring and let you know that Ben's actually started to come out of the coma"...and she said, “I don’t know how to say this...he's speaking Mandarin'," Mark told Channel 10's The Project.

'Neither of us can speak Mandarin so we just nodded but deep down quite concerned about what’s going on.'

my own opinion
