A man launched a brutal attack on his girlfriend
after watching England lose to Italy in the World
Cup, fracturing her jaw and biting off part of her
ear.
David Barr, 38, strangled partner Gemma Dykins
at their home in Mold after a marathon drinking
session that culminated with watching England’s
first World Cup match.
Mold Crown Court heard how Barr angrily
snatched his girlfriend’s phone from her during a
call to look at the screen, before following her to
the kitchen where he punched her in the face,
causing her to bang her head on the floor and
lose consciousness.
Ms Dykins suffered a fractured jaw and had some
of her ear bitten off
Prosecutor Matthew Ellis then described how
Barr, a business development manager, punched
her again before kneeling down and biting off a
chunk of her ear. He then started to strangle her.
The couple told medical staff the next morning
that she had fallen over a dog when they went to
get treatment, but a concerned friend contacted
officers when they noticed the extent of the
damage.
Barr told police it was an ‘accident’ but later said
he believed that she had been texting another
man and was suspicious that she was doing it
again.
He denied strangling her or intending to take her
life.
Barr was bailed and will be sentenced next
month.
